Hector Nevarez Magaña (b. 1994) is a Mexican-American photographer living and working in Maine. Originally from East Palo Alto, California, Hector attended Bowdoin College, where he received his BA in Visual Arts in 2016. After moving to Portland, he and five other friends co-founded New System Exhibitions (now 82Parris), an artist-run exhibition space in the Bayside neighborhood, where he currently operates and maintains his own darkroom. Magaña works primarily with black and white film. As a west coast transplant, he finds Maine’s quiet corners enthralling. His current work is transitional—once working within the tall confines of the city, he now investigates the fields, towns, and islands of Maine, haunting the spaces where others no longer do.
